A swimmer most of my life, I was fortunate to find and buy a waterfront house when my family and I moved to
Reston, VA in 1967. This made possible a daily plunge into Lake Anne, a man-made 30-acre body of water, at the
end of which sits the then- brand-new Lake Anne Village Center.

As my law office was in that center, I could walk to work in about ten minutes on a portion of what eventually
became a 50-mile pathway system in Reston. One day I decided to make the trip via swimming. I dove off our
Cluster dock behind my house and came up eight minutes later at the Village Center dock.

As at that time our office had a fully functioning bathroom (now storage over the tub), I could shower (Lake
Anne is not drinking water and the lake must be shared with dozens of Canadian geese) and get into my office
clothes.

So, off and on all summer, my daily swim was to and from the office, which allows me to make, as a claim to
fame, that I am probably the only attorney in the country who commuted to work via swimming.
